Keynote speech: Protopia: Antidote to Futures Of Fear October 18, 15:15 - 16:15 Middle Hall 2 - Future Shaping
Is a futurist, speculative designer, and founder of @protopiafutures, as well as a partner at @africanlifecentricdesign. Her work focuses on creating inclusive, context-aware visions of the future, firmly grounded in complex real-world challenges, as opposed to relying on generic technological solutions that are prone to short-term hype cycles and rapid obsolescence. With expertise in information technologies and immersive media—such as generative AI, spatial computing, VR/XR, UI, and UX—Monika explores both the potential benefits and dangers of innovation in a rapidly evolving landscape where the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds are becoming increasingly blurred.
Monika is particularly dedicated to incorporating inclusive design principles, addressing "invisible" disabilities, and ensuring that neurodivergence is taken into account across technology, policy, and physical spaces. Her goal is to design a more compassionate world that serves the needs of a diverse humanity. As a speculative designer, Monika creates prototypes of culturally diverse, socially, and environmentally engaged future scenarios that draw inspiration from visually and narratively compelling science fiction. Her goal is to translate these visions into actionable strategies to promote future literacy and prepare societies for complex global changes.
Monika’s career includes providing futurist consultancy for Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She has collaborated with leading organizations such as BBC, DreamWorks, Google, Huawei, IDEO, L’Oreal, McKinsey, Mexico City, Meta, Microsoft, MTN, Nike, SKY, TATA, Technicolor, Telefonica, the UAE, UNESCO, Universal, Warner Media, and the World Economic Forum. Monika has shared her insights through lectures at renowned academic and scientific institutions, including CERN, Rockefeller University, the Royal Society, the Royal College of Art, the Indian Institute of Technology, and OCAD University, among others.
